DePaul's Center for Church/State Studies encourages and supports informed debate over the liberties and protections of the First Amendment for the benefit of the public. Through national conferences and other gatherings, our non-denominational center brings together America's secular and religious communities to debate the role of religion in public life. Founded over a decade ago, the Center has a three-fold mission: First, to encourage the participation of religious leaders and religious liberty scholars in the public marketplace of ideas; second, to enhance public understanding of the historical and substantive theories of First Amendment jurisprudence; and third, to examine the pragmatic realities of the relationship between church and state in ways that will be helpful to both.
