The Health Law Institute, established in 1984, was the nation's first ABA-approved program of its kind. The guiding principle of the Health Law Institute is to blend the theoretical with the practical by offering a broad curriculum, monthly seminars, community involvement, a student- run journal with international circulation, and an annual symposium. The College of Law offers two distinctive programs through the Institute. The Certificate in Health Law provides law students, lawyers and health care professionals with formal training in health law through an interdisciplinary exposure to law, administration, medicine and ethics. The Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Health Law, the first academic program of its type in the country and consistently ranked among the top program in the country, is designed to address the growing demand for lawyers with specialized credentials in this field. In addition to these programs, health law courses are offered to attorneys pursuing continuing legal education as well as to College of Law and Public Services (Health Law & Policy) students. Much of the Institute's research, community outreach and conference activities center on urban health and the health policy challenges confronting our nation's larger cities.
