What is the most rewarding aspect of teaching at DePaul?
Quality teaching is prized at DePaul, and faculty who devote time and energy to delivering an excellent experience in the classroom are acknowledged.  Earning recognition for doing what I love is very rewarding.

What do you like best about DePaul students?
DePaul students are enthusiastic about their education.  They are willing to work hard and are passionate about learning.

What do students like best about the courses you teach?
I am an organized person, who is careful about providing students with all the materials they need to succeed.  I also provide students with timely and personalized feedback.  And I take the time to get to know my students – I make a point to learn their names by the third week of the quarter.

What has been your greatest success while teaching here?
Students who come back to me months, or even years, after a class has ended and tell me that they still think about the things they learned in my class.  To give you one example, a number of my algorithms students have told me stories about using the techniques we learned in class on the job.

What are some of the challenges challenge you face teaching computer science courses here at DePaul?
Many of the classes I teach are at the introductory level and have very diverse audiences.  Making sure that I am engaging all of my students is a continuing challenge.

What makes DePaul different from other universities?
The emphasis at DePaul is on personal attention.  This is true for all students, undergraduate or graduate.  The interactions range from freshman in a Discover Chicago class who learn about navigating public transportation from their teaching team to upper-level undergraduate and graduate students who have the opportunity to do cutting-edge research with faculty members.

What would you say to prospective students considering DePaul?
Find a school that matches your needs and that will be a good fit.  If you want a university with an emphasis on the student, where faculty and staff genuinely care about your success, DePaul is a good choice.

Is there anything else about your experience at DePaul that may be of interest to prospective students?
When I was finishing my Ph.D., I had a number of offers from universities around the country, from small private schools to larger public universities.  I chose DePaul because it rewards faculty for quality teaching while giving them time to conduct research and serve the community.  That balance is rare, and it produces a wonderful academic environment.
