Studying with gifted teachers who are also
successful composers provides students with the opportunity to acquire
a core knowledge in analysis, orchestration, and counterpoint combined
with an understanding of compositional procedures and contemporary
musical styles. These skills are essential for students to pursue
graduate studies successfully and to begin building professional
credentials as composers.
Composition
majors are encouraged to compose daily and are required to produce a
quantity of original works for a variety of instrumental and vocal
combinations. Students have ample opportunities to have their piece's
performed in recitals, DePaul Composers' Forum concerts, and annual
reading sessions with the DePaul Symphony Orchestra.
Students
have many excellent opportunities to hear live, professional
contemporary music performances including New Music DePaul concerts,
directed by George Flynn and presented on campus, as well as
performances by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Lyric Opera of
Chicago, and many professional new music organizations active
throughout the Chicagoland area.
