The major in finance prepares graduates for a variety of careers in the area of finance: corporate financial management, investment management, real estate investment, risk management, derivatives, banking, hedge funds, alternative investments and portfolio management. One of the most comprehensive programs offered by any business school in the country, concentrations include corporate finance, investments, banking and real estate finance.  Utilizing a state of the art finance lab, students become proficient in the most widely used analytical tools and databases used by finance professionals.  The department also offers an honors program for those students wishing to experience a more rigorous version of the curriculum in a cohort system during their junior and senior years.

A distinguished faculty reflects unusual breadth and depth in knowledge and experience. Almost 100 percent hold doctorates from nationally recognized institutions. Among them are the editors of Journal of Applied Finance, current and former executives of leading financial and non-financial firms, consultants to International Monetary Fund, Financial Economists at SEC and board members of financial institutions.

In addition to faculty expertise, students have the benefit of hearing outstanding guest lecturers. There is the Scholl Speaker Series, which brings distinguished speakers to campus, including Nobel Prize winners and other nationally recognized experts in the field of finance.

Off campus, finance majors find practical experience through the department's internship program which places students at leading firms including Merrill Lynch, Salomon Smith Barney, William Blair, Charles Schwab, Harris & Associates, Chicago Mercantile Exchange and Chicago Board Options Exchange. Many students hold part-time jobs at investment firms, banks, research organizations, as well as at the Chicago Federal Reserve Bank and the Chicago Board of Trade.
