A major in jazz studies prepares students for professional careers in the recording industry, theatre orchestras, jazz groups, and virtually all areas of the commercial music industry. Whatever your goal, today's jazz artists must be able to sight read and improvise and perform on a concert stage, in a studio, or in an avant-garde jam session. DePaul's Jazz Studies program prepares you for all of that and more.

At DePaul, you will concentrate on all aspects of jazz performance, composition, and improvisation. Assignments will take you into the city's professional recording studios where you will have the opportunity to meet and work with the best in the business. Jazz studies majors perform in one of the large jazz bands and many combos. Our jazz ensembles have won national acclaim for their performances on campus, on tour, and on recordings.

Faculty members in this program are among Chicago's top studio artists, composers, and arrangers. They have worked with virtually every major group, from Woody Herman and Gerry Mulligan to Maynard Ferguson. For jazz studies students, it is not unusual for these experiences, professional contacts, and faculty ties to lead to career opportunities after graduation.
