NEWS AND ALERTS

NOVEMBER 9, 2009:  UPDATE ON THE ILLINOIS MONETARY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (MAP)

On October 18, 2009, Governor Quinn signed a bill that authorizes funding for the Illinois Monetary Assistance Program (MAP) for the remainder of the 2009-2010 academic year.    While the future of the program is by no means clear, the bill authorizing current funding is an important foundation.
The following is a message from Father Holtschneider, thanking the DePaul community and the State of Illinois for its support of the “Save MAP” campaign.

Dear Colleagues,

We asked you to lobby state legislators on behalf of college students who faced the loss of critical financial aid, and you delivered. On Sunday, Governor Quinn signed a law that will provide Monetary Award Program (MAP) grants to qualified students through the end of this academic year.

Your efforts had a major impact. The DePaul community generated more than 3,000 contacts to state senators and representatives in support of MAP. After a rally in Springfield Thursday by as many as 5,000 college students from across the state--four busloads of which were from DePaul--the legislature voted to restore $205 million in financial aid.  The nearly unanimous vote in the House and Senate laid a firm foundation for efforts to secure MAP funding over the long term.  Your advocacy not only served scholarship recipients, but the public interest as well by developing a stronger, more competitive Illinois.

We couldn't have done it without your help. On behalf of the 4,600 DePaul students who receive $20 million in grants from MAP, I thank you for your actions.

That's the good news.

The long-term fate of MAP remains unclear. DePaul will monitor the situation in the coming months as the state seeks a more permanent resolution to its budget crisis. DePaul also will continue its work with other private and public universities and colleges in Illinois to advocate for students who rely on MAP to finance their tuition.

If necessary, we will be in touch when the state begins work on next year's budget when we may need to remind legislators again how important MAP funds are to the state's college students. In the meantime, I appreciate all you did to educate and motivate our political leaders to act in the best interests of students who rely on state MAP grants for their tuition.

Sincerely,

Rev. Dennis H. Holtschneider, C.M.
President
