This three-week interdisciplinary course explores how fin-de-siecle Vienna, the center of the vast multi-ethnic Austro-Hungarian monarchy, became the rival of Paris as the cultural capital of Europe at that time. Great names like Freud, Wittgenstein, Schnitzler, Musil, Schönberg, Klimt, Kokoschka and Schiele are just some of the many writers, philosophers, and artists who, between 1890–1918, made Vienna the cradle of modernist culture.

This one-week College of Commerce seminar in Vienna, Austria, and Prague, Czech Republic, broadens students’ awareness of the international business climate of Central Europe. Students gain and understanding of the business, political and educational issues affecting this region’s transition from a centralized to a market-driven economy. Participants visit the Constitution Court, McDonald’s headquarters, DDB and a Czech advertising agency and Ernst & Young.


Brussels, Belgium

Graduate students in Public Service learn first-hand about international public services through observing the European Union public policy process and the impact of its broad effects on the United States, including partnerships with nonprofits and NGOs. Students interact with NATO and EU staff and spend a day at the European Parliament during this spring-break trip. The program is based at the Louvain Institute near Brussels, Belgium.

Hosted by the Catholic University of Leuven, this one- or two-quarter program provides a comprehensive overview of the European Union’s emergence and development. It is designed for students who have not previously studied Western Europe in depth but who want to gain a practical understanding of modern Europe. Situated 20 minutes east of Brussels, the heart of the European Union’s institutions, the program is located in the Irish College, a 17th century building located near Leuven’s picturesque main square.

DePaul’s Kellstadt Graduate School of Management partners with the Czech Management Center to offer the MBA and Master of Science in Human Resources degrees to part-time students. Each cohort has about 30 students, lasts 19 months, and concludes with a final class in Chicago. DePaul professors teach all courses on site.

London, England

Through this three-week program, students examine British dramatic texts as works of literature, consider the historical and social issues present in the text, and see these plays and performances onstage in London. Using the variety of the current London theatre season, students explore both modern and classic pieces from text to performance. The theatrical experience is placed in its cultural context with field trips to galleries, libraries and museums as well as backstage tours.

This two-week program allows DePaul nursing students to experience London, to explore health care delivery in a very different system, and to practice psychiatric nursing in an internationally recognized treatment program. Students spend one week learning the legislative and administrative processes by which health is managed and delivered within Britain’s National Health Service. During the second week, students are assigned to work with a Kings College psychiatric nursing student, practicing nursing in the South London and Maudsley Trust.

This two-week program allows students in the School for New Learning to explore some of the world’s most outstanding sacred monuments, from magnificent York Minster in the north of England to the famous pilgrimage site of Canterbury Cathedral in the southeast and to St. Michael’s Mount in Wales. Students will discuss human culture from aesthetic, religious and social perspectives.
Study Abroad
This five- to six-month program enables students from nearly any discipline to study at either Westminster or Middlesex University. Students may select four courses from a wide range of possibilities, or they may choose an internship and two courses during their term abroad. The program includes two day trips, two overnight trips, and visits to theaters, museums, a polo match and many other aspects of British life.

Sheffield, England

This program allows students to study at the University of Sheffield for either one semester or the entire academic year. The university is one of Britain’s most popular, with 24,000 students in residence. The faculty includes internationally recognized researchers, with 59 of Sheffield’s departments given a top or second-top rating for research in a 1992 British review. Sheffield, located in the center of England near Manchester and less than 4 hours by train from the heart of London, is one of DePaul’s most popular study abroad sites.

Study Abroad
The Atlantis Dual Degree Program is a trans-Atlantic exchange program in technology and business that enables students to earn a technology degree from DePaul and an international business degree from Linköping University in Sweden. Students in DePaul’s School of Computer Science, Telecommunications and Information Systems spend the fall quarter of their junior year at Ecole de Commerce Européenne (ECE) in Lyon, France, and the winter and spring quarters at Linköping University. Participants receive their European bachelor’s degree after completing their junior year abroad and return to Chicago to finish their DePaul degree during their senior year.

Hosted by the Alliance Française, an international language school, this one-quarter program allows students to study French art history and urban design as well as hone their language skills. The program includes excursions in and around Paris, and longer trips to the surrounding French countryside, such as a weekend in Les Chateaux de la Loire, a rich historic area where several French monarchs maintained their courts, and day trips to Versailles, the palace of the Sun King, Louis XIV, and the Cathedrale de Chartres.

In conjunction with the Institute for the International Education of Students, students with advanced French language skills may study for two quarters or a full academic year. This rigorous program allows juniors and seniors to enroll in courses at the institute and one of the following institutions: l’Institut Catholique, l’Université de Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV), l’Université de Paris VIII (Vincennes-Saint Denis), the Ecole des dirigeants et créateurs d’entreprise (EDC), the Ecole de Psychologues Praticiens, Académie de la Croix Nivert, or l’Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris/Alfred Cortot. All courses are taught in French so that the students can increase verbal and written proficiency. Students studying for an entire year also may apply for a credit-bearing internship with a French company or organization.

This 10-day College of Commerce seminar seeks to broaden student awareness and understanding of the international business climate in Europe and in France, to study the evolution of business practices in France within the European Union, and to observe the EU’s impact on the French economy. French and European business practices will be covered in visits to companies and financial institutions in the Paris area, which are expected to include Microsoft France, Bic Co., EuroNext Stock Exchange, Ernst & Young Paris, Banque de France and Pictet & Cie.

Hosted by the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms Universität Bonn, this two-quarter program provides intensive study of the German language, history and culture. The University of Bonn is one of the largest universities in Germany, with extensive educational facilities and offering a wide range of courses. Bonn is centrally located; Paris, Amsterdam and Brussels are no more than 3 hours away by train. As part of the program, students will also travel to the new capital city of Berlin for a week.

This 10-day College of Commerce seminar allows students to compare and contrast business practices between manufacturing companies and service companies in an international setting. Students grasp the complexities and nuances of conducting and managing businesses in the current German domestic environment and the increasingly challenging global environment. The seminar will have a secondary focus on environmental (political, economic, cultural and demographic) factors that contribute to conditions affecting the managing of both service organizations and manufacturing firms in Germany today.

Through this two-quarter program, students attend the College Year in Athens, located next to the Roman Stadium and the National Gardens in the heart of Athens. Courses are designed to guide students to a greater understanding and appreciation of Greece—ancient, medieval, and modern—and of its neighboring countries. The program also includes excursions to locations such as Crete, Mycenae, Argos, Corinth, Olympia, Delphi, and Marathon.

Budapest, Hungary

Hosted by Corvinus University of Budapest (formerly the Budapest University of Economic Sciences and Public Administration), this one-semester program enables students to witness major economic and political changes as Eastern and Central Europe continue to move toward a market economy. Courses are taught in English by faculty from around the world and include offerings in business, humanities and the social sciences as well as Hungarian language and culture.

This month-long program explores the building of democracy in Hungary and Croatia. Students will spend three weeks in Budapest visiting Parliament, a major newspaper and vital political organizations while studying the events of the past 20 years. The final week in Croatia will focus on how democracy is built in environments of instability. The journey by boat also includes many of the most beautiful coastline cities and islands in Europe.

This two-week program allows students in the School for New Learning to fulfill several competencies while attending one of Ireland’s most famous art festivals and exploring County Connemara and County Mayo. Traditional, popular and classical musicians gather with poets, novelists, sculptors, dancers, philosophers, and artists to celebrate Ireland’s unique heritage and history during this festival.

This one- or two-quarter program, offered in cooperation with Ireland’s Institute of Public Administration, enables upper-level undergraduates to study Irish literature, politics and history and intern in the Irish Parliament. Dublin is the cultural as well as the political capital of the Irish Republic. Students are urged to take advantage of its theaters, including the world famous Abbey and the Peacock, the popular culture of the pubs, horse fairs, traditional folk festivals, the collections and lectures of the National Gallery of Ireland, and the National Museum and Library.

Graduate students in Public Service spend the summer at All Hallows College in Dublin taking one-week, executive-style courses taught by faculty from DePaul and All Hallows. Courses explore international perspectives on management and strategy in nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations, health care, social service, association, education, government and art organization management.

Through this College of Law program, students spend the spring semester studying at University College Dublin, the nation’s largest and most prestigious university. Students take advantage of courses and perspectives that they would not have access to in the United States and interact with faculty and students who come from throughout Europe.

Through this one-quarter program, students are introduced to the rich history of Rome and its place in the development of Western culture. Through courses at the Italiaidea, participants study the language, art, history, religious background, and monuments of this fascinating city. Rome is filled with numerous historical and artistic sites, including the Vatican Museum, Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and the Colosseum.

The establishment of a European food policy that gives priority to consumer protection and consumer health is at the forefront of science in policy-making within Europe. This three-week summer graduate Public Services program examines the principles, policies and practices of food quality management established by the European Union, regulated by regional governmental agencies and monitored by national and international non-governmental organizations. The science of food quality management is examined in relation to food safety, environmental sustainability, animal welfare, organic farming, traditional methods and non-genetically modified products.

Krakow, Poland

Hosted by Jagiellonian University, the oldest university in Poland, this one-semester program allows students to study Poland’s rich history as they experience its dynamic emergence as an integral part of modern Europe. While there is no language prerequisite for this program, students study basic Polish. To enhance their study of Polish society and culture, students travel extensively throughout Central Europe before classes begin.

DePaul’s College of Computing and Digital Media partners with Wy_sza Szko_a Biznesu National-Louis University to offer the Master of Science in Computer Science to part-time students. Each cohort of about 30 students completes the program via distance learning, taking courses from DePaul professors based in Chicago.

Novgorod and St. Petersburg, Russia

This short-term program enables students to study medieval art and the history of imperial Russia in Novgorod, the medieval trading emporium and center of Orthodox spirituality, and St. Petersburg, the imperial center of power. Students will be able to climb the walls of medieval forts, watch archeologists uncover new artifacts, explore the old city, and visit churches, monasteries, palaces, parks and promenades while they contemplate the history and art of this diverse and beautiful part of the world.

Hosted by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, this one-quarter program allows students to study the language, culture and society of Spain. Madrid is the geographic, political, economic and cultural heart of Spain. In addition, students will take excursions to locations such as Barcelona, Andalucia, Toledo, Salamanca, Segovia, and Ávila.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

This three-week study trip explores the particular urban forms exemplified by the cities of Amsterdam, Brussels, and Barcelona, and the social and economic forces that have shaped these European cities over time. Students consider new land-use planning, architectural and aesthetic changes that highlight key issues in urban planning, historic preservation and neighborhood revitalization. The course explores the contrast between urban development solutions in Amsterdam and cities such as Brussels and Barcelona. Through intensive field excursions, observation and the visual/photographic documentation of examples of these urban issues and characteristics, students learn about the role of these exciting cities in Europe’s past, present and future.

This three-week program explores the histories and cultures of Istanbul—the center of Byzantine civilization for a millennium, the capital of the Ottoman empire for more than 450 years and the largest city of the modern Turkish republic. Students will examine the well-preserved monuments of Roman/Byzantine civilization, explore the mosques and palaces of the Ottoman centuries, and experience the hospitality of modern Turkey.
